need help: sending email with gmail smtp
Posted by wmcneil on 01/22/2012 05:48 PM

I am debugging a M1XEP and M1EZ8 firmware version 5.2.4 I am attempting to send email using smtp.gmail.com and a gmail userid. I have tried ports 25 and 465, both "userid" and "userid@gmail.com" in the authentication fields, and no luck. I am providing a authentication password. I am also setting my "from" email address to "userid@gmail.com". I am using the "Test" button in RP to attempt to send the email, after first saving any changes to the M1, then reconnecting. On the TCP/IP settings tab, I am selecting "assigned an IP address via DHCP", and "obtain DNS automatically". when I click on "Get DNS now", I get a "The M1XEP did not receive a reply or received an invalid reply". I have lots of other devices on my network that are working correctly with DHCP. I tried configuring the DNS server to be the ip address of the router the M1XEP is behind, and then clicking on the "Test" button on the email tab resulted in the M1XEP disconnecting.

I figured this out. M1XEP does not support SMTP connection with SSL encryption. I obtained a free email account at lavabit.com, and used smtp.lavabit.com , port 587 Another issue I had was that using the "Obtain DNS automatically" option would not work. (DHCP is enabled, and the IP address is being assigned correctly, yet the DNS values that are displayed are always all zeros). To work around this, I used the numeric IP (currently instead of smtp.lavabit.com
