Firmware 5.2.0 install failure
Posted by epsteing on 05/10/2010 10:20 PM

I just attempted to install firmware 5.2.0.

After installing bootware 3.3.6 the panel reported that the existing firmware was "erased". Not so bad yet, but firmware 5.2.0 does not appear in the dropdown box so there's no way to install it. Unable to go back to bootware 3.3.2 nor to firmware 5.1.24.

I've tried to reinstall bootware 3.3.6 and it seems to install fine, but still can't load the firmware.

The panel is essentially bricked at the moment.

Same problem here. The bootloader update worked, but somehow the updated firmware file doesn't realize that it can be installed on this version of the bootloader. I suspect Elk needs to change a parameter in the firmware file.

What version of ELK-RP are you running 1.6.26 or 2.0.6? Are you updating using a Direct Serial connection or through the LAN and the M1XEP?

In my case, I am running ElkRP2 v. 2.0.6 and connecting via the M1XEP which also has the latest firmware. The problem is that although I have a M1_5.2.0.bin file in my RP Updates folder on the hard drive, ElkRP2 doesn't give me that file as an option for update. I tried to rename M1_5.2.0.bin to M1_5.1.24.bin to trick RP2 into giving me it as an option. When I tried this workaround, the option to update to 5.1.24 went away too. Of course I cannot install the real 5.1.24 update on bootware 3.3.6, so my system is bricked. I wonder if my M1_5.2.0.bin file is corrupted. I tried re-downloading, but the problem persists. Maybe there is something wrong with the file at the host.

The M1G update file (BIN file) that was released May 10 was compatible only with hardware rev "M" boards. It should have been marked as compatible with rev "F" through "M." This has been corrected and the new BIN file posted on this site. If you downloaded the incompatible file, download the corrected file now and try again.

That fixed it. After installing the firmware, I didn't even lose the panel configuration. Thanks for the quick response!

In my case, with the M1's firmware erased, I was no longer able to connect to the M1 via the M1XEP. I had to bypass the M1XEP and connect my PC directly to the serial port of the M1 to flash ver. 5.2.0. However, my PC doesn't have a serial port, so I purchased a USB to serial cable (nice that Vista installs the drivers automatically). Automatedoutlet.com kindly overnighted me the cable for a fee. So this little foray was not cheap. Cable + fast shipping = $$. My lesson is don't be the first one on the block to install Elk's latest updates, and be vigilant about backing up RP database files. At least I have the DST bug fixed and my system wasn't down too long.
