Halloween Automation
Posted by mjcreamer459 on 11/02/2009 10:42 PM

This past Halloween I wanted to haunt my front yard and, of course, I wanted to make the whole thing automatic. The M1 worked beautifully.

Here are the details:
In the yard: tombstones, coffin with skeleton, lights, sound, other assorted items
1. For sounds I used the Recordable Voice Module & Siren Driver - ELK-120. It allowed me 4 2-minute recordings (moaning, screaming, doors creaking, etc.) which I controlled via M1 Outputs.
2. Next a fog machine which I controlled using an ELK 912B Relay Module 12/24 Volt activated via M1 Output.
3. Various X10 and Insteon lights and strobes controlled from the M1.

When trick-or-treaters approached the coffin, a motion sensor triggered the Halloween task which started the sound, lights and fog machine.
All I had to do was enjoy the show and give out the candy.
I just thought I'd share how cool the M1 is-- both practical and fun.

That's fantastic! This past Halloween I un-intentionally pulled a trick on the neighborhood kids when I left my porch light on and left the house for the evening. Reviewing my security camera the next day had no less than FIFTY kids standing at my door for sometimes minutes at a time, for no profit to them :D. This year I'll have my Elk system in place and was considering at least the following: - Bowl of candy on the porch + a sign by the doorbell "Ring the bell...if you dare..." - Pressing the doorbell would cut off the porch light and activate a strobe light and the huge siren conveniently placed right above the front door for a few seconds - Possibly followed by a recording of an evil laugh - Porch light back on and ready to roll again The existing security camera recording the frights the entire time, of course. Great work on yours though!
