Q: WIRELESS - What accessories do I buy to have wireless capability?
 
A: You need a GE Security (Caddx) Networx Receiver (NX408E, NX416E, or NX448E) and any of their compatible sensors. To connect the receiver to the M1 you need a WO35A 5 pin wire harness available from ELK. That's it!
 


Q: PLC INTERFACES - Which devices are compatible with the M1?
 
A: For interfacing with PowerLine "PLC" devices there are 3 popular interfaces on the market today. They are: PSC05 by X10 Pro, TW523 by X10, and Powerlinc II by Smarthome Mfg. Each is considered to be capable of 2-way Send and Recieve communications. Unfortunately, Elk has discovered an incompatibility between the M1 and the Smarthome Powerlinc II Interface. Based on the specifications by X10, which permits communications logic levels to be up to 15 Volts, Elk designed its PLC port to use 12 Volt logic levels. Unfortunately, the Powerlinc II appears to be limited to 5 Volt logic. Elk has already taken steps to release a new version M1 circuit board (Rev. I) which will permit full compatibility with the Powerlinc II. This board revision will begin showing up in the field during Jan 05. The revision letter can be found on the upper left corner. For earlier M1 boards the recommended PLC interfaces are the PSC05 or TW523. If one of these are not available, a Powerlinc II interface can be manipulated to work with the M1 in a 1-way (Send Only) mode. To do this set the M1 "Select PLC Mode" Jumper JP2 to the 1-way mode and connect the M1 and the Powerlinc II using its supplied 6pin to 8pin adapter cord. The M1 will be able to transmit and turn PLC devices ON or OFF but will not be able to receive PLC signals and/or react to a PLC command transmitted by another device.
 


Q: What, exactly, are "Rules"?
 
A: You can write customized instructions, called "Rules," for the M1 to control what it does in response to certain events. These rules are written with the help of ElkRP's Rules Programming Engine. You can write a rule to turn on a light any time a door is opened, to turn your lawn sprinkler on a dawn every other day for ten minutes, and to automatically adjust your thermostat when you leave on vacation. Rules give you access to "Triggering Events," such as a time of day, an input zone change, a user action, and even trouble conditions. Based on one or a combination of such events, you can control all the M1's outputs, activate the dialer, arm the system, etc. The possibilities are endless!
 


Q: KEYPADS - Do the Keypads have built-in speaker(s)?
 
A: The ELK-M1KP has a built-in speaker but it is only used for the beep tones. All voice and siren sounds come from the alarm outputs 1 or 2 on the main board. It is possible to install supplimentary speakers (i.e. ELK SP12F, etc.) behind or nearby any keypad and wire these back to the alarm output(s).
 


Q: Since the M1 interfaces with Caddx Wireless, can other Caddx devices be used, such as Keypads?
 
A: No, the M1 can only communicate with the NX548E Receiver and the older model NX408E, 416E, and 448E wireless receivers.
 


Q: TALKING - Can the voice be scheduled to never talk after a certain time?
 
A: Yes, effective with firmware 4.3.5 you may create a rule to disable the non-alarm voice messages based on a time of day, a specific event, etc. For example: "WHENEVER THE TIME IS 9:00PM", "THEN DISABLE NON-ALARM VOICE MESSAGES." A second rule is required to re-enable the non-alarm voice messages.
 


Q: Common M1-XEP email issues (hats off to teduncan)
 
A: 1) Ensure you're not connected via RP when testing sending email. 2) Make sure you have a valid "From" address. Many ISP's and other providers downstream from you will block an email message if they cannot verify the "From" address. 3) Verify your mail server's OUTGOING URL or IP address. Some use different servers for incoming vs. outgoing. 4) If your M1XEP is set to a STATIC address (vs. DHCP), make sure the DNS entries are correct on the TCP/IP Settings page. Otherwise, the M1XEP cannot look up the mail server's URL. 5) If your mail server requires authentication (username/password) check the spelling, upper/lower case, and also check if you have a user ID. Some email providers assign a User ID that is different from your login user name - perhaps you need it instead. (New feature with XEP firmware v1.2) 6) Try a simple rule, like WHENEVER EVERY 5 MINUTES THEN SEND EMAIL MESSAGE 1, to ensure the problem is with the email sending and not the rule.
 


Q: KEYPADS - How many Keypads does the M1 support?
 
A: The ELK-M1G (Gold) and ELK-M1EZ8 each support up to 16 Keypads.
 


Q: OUTPUTS - How many outputs are on the M1 board?
 
A: There are 13 outputs on the main board. Output 1 is Voice/Siren, 2 is Siren/Voltage, 3 is a form C relay, and 7 to 16 are low current 12V pins. We skip outputs 4,5, and 6.
 


Q: Can the M1 talk and if so, what modules or options are required?
 
A: Yes, the ELK-M1G talks! There is nothing to buy or install. No add-on modules or messy wires to connect! NOTE: The ELK-M1EZ8 DOES NOT TALK.
